Parents, as you know, under Louisiana law your student is homeschooled, so it’s very important to register and renew each year. There are 2 ways to register as a homeschool: 1) as a nonpublic school (not seeking state approval) and 2) as a BESE-approved Home Study student. The first option is the simplest, so we recommend it for Grammar School students. Once your student reaches 9th or 10th grade, it’s best to use option 2 so your student may qualify for TOPS scholarships. Find information on college readiness and registering as a home study program in the document at the bottom of the page.
How to Register Your Homeschool—Grammar School
To register your homeschool as a nonpublic school (not seeking state approval):
The Louisiana DOE PDF document giving more information is available here. If you have further questions, please contact Sequitur’s Headmaster, Thaddeaus Swart: [email protected].
- Go to the Louisiana Department of Education website: www.louisianabelieves.com, scroll down to the “Quick Links” section at the bottom, then click “Home Study.”
- This will take you to the main Home Study page. At the end of the first paragraph on that page, you will see the words “nonpublic school (not seeking state approval).” Click that link.
- This will take you to the page you need for registering your homeschool. Don’t be thrown off by the language referring to you as a school! If you like, you will have the chance to choose a name for your family’s homeschool. We are not aware of any requirement for you to notify previous schools, so until further notice you may ignore that section.
- At the bottom of that page, click the button that says “Enter Attendance Information For a Nonpublic School (Not Seeking State Approval).”
- Next, click the button to “Report total attendance.”
- The next screen will ask for several pieces of information.
- Under “School Information,” you do not enter Sequitur’s name, but the name of your family’s homeschool -- it could be as simple as “Smith Family School” or as creative as you like.
- The “total number of students enrolled” is the number of your children you are homeschooling. (Louisiana law requires that students attend school from age 7 to 18 or high school graduation.)
- The “School Leader’s Name” will be that of the primary homeschooling parent.
- We do recommend providing your email address so you will receive printable confirmation of your status as a homeschooling family. In addition to the assurance of tangible proof that you’ve followed the correct procedure, you may use this letter to secure teacher discounts at Barnes & Noble and other stores.
- If asked to submit a number of days your student attended your homeschool, you may consult the Sequitur calendar, bearing in mind that you most likely put in a full day of homeschool on Fridays as well. In Louisiana, a student is legally required to attend school at least 167 days each school year.
